What Is Body Doubling, and Is There an App for It?

Body doubling means doing your task in the presence of someone else who is also working. The other person does not help, does not check on you and does not need to know what you are doing. Their presence is the point. It is a long-standing strategy in the ADHD community and it is the same reason a library or cafe can feel easier to work in than an empty room.

Is there an app for body doubling?

Yes. EarlyBird (App Store ID 6747004367) is a body doubling app for iPhone. You join a live focus room where other people are already working, write one line about what you are going to do, and work. Rooms run 24/7, so someone is usually in one, including late at night.

Do I have to use my camera or microphone?

No. EarlyBird rooms have no mic, no camera and no small talk. You can see who else is in the room, what they are working on and how long they have left, and nobody can see or hear you.

Can I body double with friends?

Yes. Alongside the public rooms, you can make a private room and invite friends, a study group or a colleague.

What does it cost?

EarlyBird is free to download. EarlyBird Premium is an optional weekly or monthly subscription; on the US App Store it is listed at $2.99 per week or $4.99 per month. Prices in other countries are shown on the App Store page and in the app.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone only, on iOS 18.2 or later. EarlyBird is not available on Android.
