Free study rooms for iPhone

Study with friends, or with strangers at 2am

EarlyBird makes studying together something you do not have to arrange. Open a private room for your group, or join a public one that is already running. Everyone's task and timer is visible, nobody is on camera, and the distracting apps stay blocked for the session.

How the rooms work

A private room for your group, a public one for the bad nights

Studying with people works right up until the logistics get involved. Someone has a shift, someone forgets, and the session that was going to save your week never happens.

EarlyBird runs both kinds of room. Private ones you invite people into, and public ones that are already full at three in the morning, so the plan never depends on everybody being free at once.

Private rooms

Make a room, send the invite, and your study group has a place to be. Everyone sees the same countdown, the task each person typed at the start, and who has checked in at the end. It is closer to sitting at the same library table than to a group chat where somebody eventually posts a meme.

Because there is no camera, nobody has to tidy their room or look awake. People join from a bus, a kitchen table, a shift break. As an app to study together with friends who are nowhere near you, that turns out to matter more than any feature.

Public rooms

Open the app at 2am and there are already people in a session. That is the part nobody expects to like. You are not there to make friends, and neither are they, which is exactly why it works: a room full of strangers has no small talk in it.

Most apps for studying together assume you arrive with a group. If you had a reliable group you would probably not be searching for an app at all. A study together app has to work on the night your group has gone quiet, or it does not really work.

A session, start to finish

What a study session with friends looks like

About two minutes of setup, then everyone is quiet until the timer runs out.

  1. An EarlyBird study room with 125 participants and a Start My Focus button

    Open the room

Invite your friends to a private room or join a public one. You can see how many people are focusing right now and what each of them is working on before you commit.

  2. An EarlyBird focus session in progress with an egg cracking as the timer counts down

    Everyone names one thing

Each person types what they are going to finish and the shared timer starts. Saying it in front of four other people is a surprisingly effective way to pick a realistic task.

  3. EarlyBird asking what photo evidence you will show at the end of the focus session

    Check in at the end

When the timer stops you check in, with a photo of the work if you turned that on. The room sees who finished what, and everyone's hours land in their own stats.

Where it fits

Study rooms, video calls and study with me videos

People already study together in three or four ways. Each one breaks somewhere different, usually about forty minutes in.

Accountability

For the week your accountability partner goes quiet

A standing arrangement with one other person is the strongest version of this, and the most fragile. It survives right up until their exam week collides with yours. Used as an accountability partner app, EarlyBird keeps the arrangement and removes the part that breaks: you both see when the other is in a session, what they said they would finish, and whether they checked in.

Nothing needs booking. There is no shared calendar to maintain and no message asking whether they are still up for it, which is usually the message nobody sends. When your person is unavailable the public rooms are still there, so a quiet week costs you one session instead of the habit.

If you have been looking at accountability partner software built for teams, with dashboards and weekly reports, this is the smaller thing. One room, one timer, one photo at the end. That is the version people are still using in March.

  • A private room works as a standing slot with one person or five
  • Tasks are stated at the start, so nobody is grading intentions
  • Optional photo check-in at the end, which is harder to talk your way around
  • Free, including the rooms and the app blocking
  • Body doubling for ADHD

The reason a room full of quiet strangers makes starting easier, and what to do at the points where sessions usually collapse.

  • The distraction blocker

How the app block holds for the length of a session, enforced by iOS rather than by everyone promising to behave.

  • The study timer and tracker

Shared session lengths, subject tags, and weekly totals you can compare with the rest of your group.

Questions

Studying together: FAQ

How do I study with friends in EarlyBird?

Create a private room and share the invite. Everyone who joins sees the same session length, what each person is working on and how much time is left. No camera or microphone is needed, and anyone who turns up late can drop into the session that is already running.

What if none of my friends are free?

Join a public room. They run around the clock, so there is nearly always a session in progress with people in other timezones. Body doubling needs company rather than friendship, so a room of strangers works about as well as a room of people you know, and occasionally better, because nobody is tempted to talk.

Is there video or voice chat in a study room?

No. There is no camera and no microphone. You see who is in the room, what they are working on and how long they have left. Keeping it there is deliberate. A video call turns into a conversation, and a conversation is a different activity from studying.

Can I use it as an accountability partner app?

Yes, and it is free to use that way. A standing private room with one other person gives you the accountability without the scheduling: you both see when the other is in a session, what they said they would finish, and whether they checked in at the end.

How is a study room different from a study with me video?

A study with me video is one person's desk, recorded once, playing at you. An EarlyBird room is people working at the same time as you, with their own timers running and their own tasks written down, and it logs your hours while you are in it.

How many people can join a private room?

A private room is built for a study group rather than a lecture hall, so it suits a handful of people who actually intend to work. Public rooms are much bigger and often have dozens of people focusing at the same time.
